I grew up not expecting much from life so I appreciate everything, I enjoy it and that’s it.

Mary is a multi-faceted, beautiful, intelligent, and vulnerable person. She has ambition and this is not a bad thing. She’s completely honest and if you hate her you’re essentially not watching this show correctly. I think, anyway.

“How do you prepare for a role?

Depends what it is. If it’s a script that covers a part of history I know nothing about, then I’ll research it. But you can scribble down as many notes as you like, trawl through every book on the subject or period – doesn’t mean you’ll act it any better.”

“It’s almost ironic that the modest actress portrays a future Countess, when her own background is much more humble. Times have changed in Britain, as they have in Dockery’s own life, now a privileged one that was born out of necessity and a passion for performing, rather than through a marriage of convenience of blue-blooded ancestry. She couldn’t be more proud to be a modern Englishwoman for that fact.”

in-flagrante:

This film (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) sums up my teen years, when pop mattered most. I was 13 when I first watched it, and fell madly in love with Matthew Broderick. It’s a classic that never loses its appeal. I can still recite every scene.

Academically, I’m pretty rubbish. I was always late for English lessons because I was off devising stuff to perform with my friends. My English teacher actually complained about it. So it was no surprise I ended up getting an A for drama and a D for English in my A-levels.

“I‘d love to be a part of an American show. I’m obsessed with Homeland and Mad Men. All I really do is watch box sets. My brain is programmed now to only watch things for 40 minutes then go on to the next episode. Films feel like they’re too long nowadays. I’d love to work with Kristen Wiig. I watched her on Saturday Night Live before she did Bridesmaids and she’s one of the most talented actresses around.”

Happiness is one of the most important things in life but happiness is something you have to find in yourself - being who you are and accepting who you are - and no one can do that for you.

I don’t always borrow designer clothes for events- I like to wear my own stuff. When I’m photographed in a dress more than once, people say ‘oh, she’s worn the same thing twice’, which is hilarious, as surely everyone else does that!

When I was a child, I went to stage school three times a week in the evenings - singing, ballet, tap, modern and acting, and I loved it.

Acting may be an escape from reality but it gives you joy. I grew up not expecting much from life so I appreciate everything, I enjoy it and that’s it.
